General Bipin Rawat was India’s first chief of defense staff and the highest-ranking military general of the country.
General Rawat sadly lost his life in a helicopter crash at Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor, along with his wife, Madhulika Rawat, and 11 others who sustained grave injuries. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 8th December 2021.
General Bipin Rawat was on his way to the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington where he was to deliver a lecture.
General Rawat was in the Mi-17V-5 helicopter together with his wife, defense assistant, security commandos, and an IAF pilot when the chopper crashed for reasons yet to be discovered in ongoing investigations. The helicopter crash occurred shortly after the Russian-made Mi-17 V5 chopper took off from the Air Force base in Sulur, Coimbatore, and headed for Wellington in the Nilgiri Hills.
As CDS, General Rawat was helping achieve an incredibly seamless cohesion among the army, air force, and navy. While investigations continue to ascertain the cause of the crash, tributes are pouring in from around the world for India’s top military general.
