The new Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer, has confirmed that the confinement decreed to contain the outbreak of coronavirus cases will conclude next Sunday, as planned, although those who have not received the vaccine must continue to restrict non-essential movements.
Nehammer has ruled out the possible extension of the confinement for the population as a whole, after noting a decrease in infections. Since the lockdown began on November 22, the incidence has fallen by almost half and, after exceeding 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days, it is now around 600.
The details of the reopening on the 13th, however, will be known at the end of a meeting called on Wednesday and in which it will be determined, among other things, under what requirements non-essential stores and bars will be able to reopen. The authorities do not rule out maintaining stricter measures in the regions with the highest incidence.
The new chancellor, who has succeeded Alexander Schallenberg after his resignation, has launched a new call for vaccination and insisted that it is “necessary” that from February it is mandatory to have completed the guideline, according to the newspaper ‘ Die Presse ‘.
The European Center for Disease Control (ECDC) ranks Austria as one of the countries with the lowest immunization rate in the entire EU, as only two out of three inhabitants are vaccinated with all the necessary doses.
