At least “one person is dead and another 20 missing” after the sinking off Cameroon on Friday of a cargo ship with several people on board that was traveling from Equatorial Guinea, as reported by the Equatorial Guinean national television, TVGE.
“Of the 45 passengers and crew on board the ship, the Navy rescued 20 people and recovered the lifeless body of a woman; the rest are currently missing,” TVGE announced in a report collected by the MAP agency.
According to a statement by the Cameroonian ambassador in Malabo, Désiré Jean Claude Owono, the cargo ship ‘Flavor’ set sail from the Equatorial Guinean capital before sinking “off the border waters of Cameroon”, with “several passengers of different nationalities” including Cameroonians, in addition of the nine members of the crew. “
Among the nine members of the crew, only “the Cameroonian captain of the ship” was rescued by the Equatorial Guinean navy, “according to the diplomat.” The survivors were taken to the general hospital in Malabo for their care, “she added.
According to one of the survivors interviewed by TVGE, the shipwreck was due to a storm that ended up overturning the ship, which was also carrying six containers of goods.
