A father in his forties was stabbed ten times in the throat yesterday, Tuesday, May 10 around 6:00 p.m. in the 13th arrondissement of Marseille, as confirmed by a police source to the French newspaper Le Figaro. The emergency services performed a cardiac massage on the seriously injured victim, who was later transferred to the hospital with a serious prognosis.
The attack took place near Sévigné catholic school group, Chemin du Merlan a la Rose. The victim, a military doctor from Laveran hospital, was attacked while he was sitting on a bench about fifty meters from the school. He was accompanied by his two children aged 3 and 7., whom he had just picked up from the educational center. The motive for the stabbing is still unknown.
Neutralized and disarmed by four bystanders, the attacker was arrested by the Police with a Swiss Army knife in his possession. Is about Mohamed L., 23 years old, born in Brignoles (Var). Despite his youth, the detainee is an old acquaintance of the Police, although, apparently, he would be off the intelligence radar. According to several witnesses, the suspect said that “acted in the name of Allah” during the attack. Taken into police custody, the young man made “delusional comments” evoking “Allah” and the “devil”. Police were unable to measure his blood alcohol level due to his “very agitated” state.
However, the terrorist hypothesis would have been ruled out by the investigators, a police source told AFP on Tuesday night. The aggressor would suffer psychological disorders.
“After searching the author’s house, we can definitively rule out the terrorist hypothesis”This source told AFP, specifying that there would be no indications in the field of religion or radicalization. Likewise, the parents of the aggressor indicated that his son “complained of psychiatric disorders for a few weeks, that he was detained for that reason, and that he had been missing from his home for 48 hours“.
The Marseille prosecutor’s office took over the investigation on Tuesday night. “Thanks to passers-by and the police for their quick reaction,” Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin tweeted last night.
Three police officers are guarding the Catholic school today to secure the educational center and avoid crowds, according to what a parent from the school told Le Figaro. The Sévigné school group has created a psychological unit for students.
